Immunotoxicity and Related Assays
Therapeutic and other compounds can negatively affect the immune system of an individual in a number of ways. If a compound causes overall bone marrow toxicity and myelosuppression, it is likely to be immunotoxic since the lymphoid progenitors in the marrow would be affected. Therefore, assessing potential myelotoxicity with the CFU-GM assay is an excellent initial approach for predicting immunotoxic liabilities of new compounds.
There are currently no standardized CFC assays for human lymphoid progenitors. However, a mouse pre-B cell assay is available for clients that want to look specifically at their compound’s effects on the B cell lineage.
